Bold Plan To Improve Aboriginal Health And Wellbeing
The Andrews Labor Government has today unveiled an ambitious new plan to revolutionise how Victoria’s health and human services work with Aboriginal communities, backed up by a $7.1 million funding boost.
Minister for Health Jill Hennessy and Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos today launched the Korin Korin Balit-Djak Aboriginal Health, Wellbeing and Safety Plan for the next 10 years. The plan puts Aboriginal self-determination front and centre in all of Victoria’s health and human services.
That means Aboriginal communities will lead the development and delivery of policies and services to Aboriginal Victorians, while the Government plays a supportive role.
To support Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisations so they can thrive into the future, we are delivering a $7.1 million package for infrastructure improvements such as minor capital works, new equipment and technology.
This funding is in addition to the more than $73 million invested as part of the Government’s Koolin Balit program over the past five years, which will continue. The bold new approach will implement Aboriginal community-led responses to Aboriginal health, wellbeing and safety concerns.
The Labor Government has listened to Aboriginal voices and delivered a new way of delivering services that better meets the cultural needs and aspirations of Aboriginal communities.
Five key areas of focus in the Korin Korin Balit-Djak are:
- Aboriginal community leadership
- Prioritising Aboriginal culture and community
- System reform across the health and human services sector
- Safe, secure, strong families and individuals
- Physically, socially and emotionally healthy Aboriginal communities.
Supporting the plan is the Aboriginal Governance and Accountability Framework that sets how we engage with and work in partnership with Aboriginal communities. The plan will be reviewed every three years to respond to new and emerging issues. It has been developed in consultation with Aboriginal communities and experts.
