The Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, Andrew Jackomos, has advised the Government that he will not seek reappointment when his current term ends next year.

Mr Jackomos was appointed in July 2013 as the first Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, after 30 years’ experience in the public sector.

He was awarded the Public Service Medal and admitted as a Victorian Fellow with the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) in 2006. In 2013, he was appointed as an IPAA National Fellow.

Mr Jackomos has made a significant contribution to improving the lives of Aboriginal children and young people through his work as Commissioner, and through his advocacy for an Aboriginal Children’s Forum.

He has authored ground breaking reports into the child protection system’s application of the Aboriginal child placement principle and the circumstances of Aboriginal children and young people in out-of-home care.

On behalf of the Government I thank Andrew for his tireless dedication to improving the lives of Victoria’s Aboriginal children and young people, and for shining a light on issues affecting the entire community.

Andrew is a proud Yorta Yorta/Gunditjmara man and I look forward to continuing to work with him to improve the lives of Aboriginal children and young people.

Mr Jackomos’s current term ends 30 June, 2018. The Government will begin the process of recruiting a new Commissioner soon.
