Working With Councils To Stop Family Violence
The Andrews Labor Government is partnering with councils to promote gender equality to stop the scourge of family violence.
Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence Natalie Hutchins joined Minister for Local Government Marlene Kairouz, women mayors, CEOs and local government advocacy groups today to announce $2.4 million for primary prevention grants in family violence.
Local governments play a critical role in the culture and attitudes of their community through the services and initiatives they run at a local level.
That’s why the Labor Government is working with councils to identify and run the prevention programs that are best for their respective communities.
As part of the First Action Plan of the Free from Violence strategy to prevent family violence these grants will support councils who are currently rolling out innovative programs that work to prevent family violence and those who would like to begin prevention programs.
Councils will be able to apply for grants of up to $100,000 each to support new and existing programs. A co-contribution will be sought from larger and non-rural Councils.
The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) will receive $420,000 to help coordinate, monitor and evaluate the prevention programs across the state and to continue their leadership role in supporting all 79 local councils in their efforts to prevent family violence.
This funding is part of the $15.5 million in the Victorian Budget 2017/18 to deliver prevention of family violence initiatives.
This funding responds to Recommendation 187 of the Royal Commission into Family Violence.
