Boosting Self-Determination In Preston
The Andrews Labor Government is supporting self-determination – lifting the first mortgage on the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency Cooperative Ltd (VACCA) in Preston.
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Natalie Hutchins visited VACCA today to make the announcement, which the Cooperative full control of its property and the economic autonomy to grow and plan for its future.
Ms Hutchins also announced a $49,000 grant for VACCA to develop a business case on the viability of a youth foyer to provide disadvantaged young people with secure accommodation, case management, education and training.
The Aborigines Advancement League (the League) has also received $50,000 for minor works and upgrades.
The League is the oldest Aboriginal organisation in Victoria and has a long history of supporting community welfare, sporting and recreational activities for the Aboriginal community living in Melbourne.
Today’s funding will be used to supply and install new air conditioning and heating units throughout the Thornbury facility.
Both grants were secured through Labor Government’s Aboriginal Community Infrastructure program, which has invested $14.6 million to improve service delivery, as well as the cultural connectedness and wellbeing of communities.
