A treaty between Aboriginal Victorians and the Victorian Government is one step closer, with new funding to advance negotiations.

A $28.5 million investment, delivered as part of the Victorian Budget 2017/18, will help lay the groundwork for treaty negotiations and ensure Aboriginal Victorians are at the centre of the discussion.

The landmark investment includes funding for the development of a new representative body, as well as a self-determination plan.

Dedicated funding will also go towards further consultation and to make sure Aboriginal Victorians are at the heart of the decision making process.

The funding announcement comes as Aboriginal Victorians from around the state meet today to discuss the path forward for treaty.

The meeting, being hosted by the Aboriginal Treaty Interim Working Group (ATIGW), includes an update from ATIWG members on the treaty process to date, ahead of a discussion on the make-up of a new representative body.

The Andrews Labor Government is working with Aboriginal Victorians on achieving real self-determination.
