Helping Diverse Communities Tackle Family Violence
The Andrews Labor Government is helping culturally diverse Victorians escape family violence with $10.5 million for a range of community-led prevention programs and specialist support services.
Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott announced the package today, which responds to recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence and forms part of the Government’s 10-year plan Ending Family Violence: Victoria’s Plan for Change.
It will improve access to information and available services for members of Victoria’s multicultural communities.
The funding includes a landmark $1.8 million pilot program which will create links between five established organisations experienced in working with migrant and refugee communities and support initiatives to change attitudes, beliefs and behaviours that lead to family violence.
It will operate out of three metropolitan (north, south and west Melbourne) and two regional locations (Barwon and Goulburn Valley regions).
Additional support will be provided to key representative groups to meet the needs of Victoria’s Indian, Muslim, African and faith communities, as well as $1.2 million over four years to support family violence prevention initiatives of the Government’s Multifaith Advisory Group.
Funds will also be directed to the Capacity Building and Participation Program, which encourages multicultural Victorians to fully participate and contribute to everyday life.
Grants of up to $150,000 over two years are available, with the next grants round due to open in early 2018.
