The Andrews Labor Government is supporting local government programs that are working to prevent family violence in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence Natalie Hutchins today visited Casey and Cardinia Councils to announce almost $200,000 in funding to support programs that prevent family violence.

Local government is in a unique position to stop family violence before it starts. Councils work closely with local families, community organisations, businesses and sports clubs. This places them in the strategic position to address inequality and violent behaviour in the community.

The City of Casey will receive a grant of $80,000 to continue its efforts to create a family-friendly community, where women and children feel safe.

A further $5,000 will support a local family violence project at Hallam Senior Secondary College. Students have been exploring the devastating impact of family violence on where they live and what they can do to have a positive impact in their community.

Cardinia Shire Council will receive $75,000 to put in place a policy to prevent violence against women, partner with local businesses on prevention, and promote women’s leadership in the workplace.

A further $35,000 will allow Cardinia Shire Council and Bass Shire Coast Council to partner together on efforts to address violence against women and children.

The Labor Government has invested a record $2.6 billion to support victim survivors and create a Victoria free from violence.
