Liberals Finally Come To The Table On Rate Cap
Minister for Local Government, Natalie Hutchins, has welcomed the Liberal Opposition’s decision to finally support the Andrews Labor Government’s fair go council rates cap.
As reported by 3AW radio yesterday, Opposition spokesperson David Davis said the Coalition wanted to see the cap in place as soon as possible.
Ms Hutchins said that while Mr Davis’ enthusiasm for the policy was noted, the framework for the cap needed to be in place and consultation needed to occur before the implementation date of 2016-17.
As committed before the election, the Labor Government will require all councils to cap their rates at inflation. Councils seeking to exceed the cap will need to make their case to the Essential Services Commission (ESC).
The ESC has also been tasked with developing a framework for the fair go rate cap and conducting consultation with councils and local communities.
